Frequently asked questions

Rental policies, mileage, driving restrictions, winter tips, and everything you need to know about renting at Eagle / Vail and Jackson Hole.

Rental requirements

What do I need to rent a vehicle?+
All drivers must be 25 years or older with a valid driver’s license and a major credit card in the same name. Valid proof of collision coverage is required at pickup.
Do you accept debit cards?+
No. We accept major credit cards only — no debit cards.
Can I add an additional driver?+
Yes. Additional drivers must be at least 25, present a valid license, and be added to the rental agreement at the counter. A daily fee may apply.

Reservations & pickup

How do I make a reservation?+
Reserve online at dollar.com or thrifty.com, or call the counter directly. Walk-ups are welcome subject to availability.
How long is my reservation held?+
Reservations are held for 2 hours after your scheduled pickup time. After that, the reservation is automatically cancelled and a new one at the current rate will need to be made.
Where do I pick up my vehicle?+
At Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), the Dollar/Thrifty counter is inside the terminal. At Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), our off-airport location provides complimentary shuttle service to and from the terminal.

Mileage & driving area

Is mileage unlimited?+
No. Rentals include 150 free driving miles per day. Additional miles are charged at $0.29 per mile. We do not offer unlimited mileage at these locations.
Where can I drive the vehicle?+
Driving is restricted to the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico. If you drive outside these states without written authorization, all optional protections (LDW, RLI/SLI, PAI/PEI) are voided and mileage reverts to 100 free miles per day with excess mileage charged at $0.50 per mile for the entire rental duration.
Do you offer one-way rentals?+
No. Our locations do not participate in one-way rentals. Vehicles must be returned to the location specified on the rental agreement.

Pricing & billing

What is the minimum rental charge?+
The minimum charge is 1 day (24 hours).
How much will be held on my credit card?+
We authorize the estimated cost of the rental plus 25%, with a minimum hold of $300. The final charge is determined at return and is subject to audit.
How do tolls work?+
If you use an electronic toll road, an administrative fee of $10 per toll plus the toll amount will be charged to the credit card on file. You can avoid fees by using your own transponder.
Are there cleaning fees?+
Smoking in the vehicle will result in a treatment fee to remove smoke odor. A minimum fee of $150 applies for excessive stains, dirt, odor, or pet hair.
Can I get a receipt after my rental?+
Email helpdesk@dollarvail.com (EGE) or info@dollarjac.com (JAC) with your rental agreement number and we'll send a copy.

Insurance & coverage

Do I need rental car insurance?+
Valid proof of collision coverage is required at pickup. Your personal auto insurance or certain gold/platinum credit cards may provide coverage. We offer optional Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI), and Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) at the counter. Check your own insurance for rental vehicle coverage and deductible amounts before purchasing LDW.
What voids LDW protection?+
LDW will not cover damage from: intentional misconduct, driving under the influence, racing, commercial use or towing, committing crimes, unauthorized drivers, fraudulent rental information, driving outside the permitted rental area, or tampering with the speedometer/odometer.
What happens if the vehicle is damaged?+
Report damage at the counter or file a report online. Our claims team will assess the damage and work with your insurance or credit card company.

Returns & extensions

What are your hours?+
Both locations are generally open 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM daily. Hours vary seasonally — call ahead in shoulder season to confirm.
What if I return the car late?+
A grace period of 29 minutes applies. After that, an additional day is charged at the applicable rate.
Can I extend my rental?+
Yes. Call the pickup location or email helpdesk@dollarvail.com (EGE) / info@dollarjac.com (JAC) before your scheduled return time. Extensions are subject to availability and may be at a different rate.
Do I need to refuel before returning?+
Yes. Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as pickup (typically full). A refueling charge at prevailing local rates plus a service fee applies otherwise.

Winter driving

Do you have AWD or 4WD vehicles?+
Yes. We carry SUVs and trucks with AWD or 4WD, ideal for mountain passes. Request AWD/4WD when you book or ask at the counter.
Are vehicles equipped for winter?+
Vehicles are equipped with all-season or snow-rated tires depending on the season. We maintain our fleet to meet Colorado and Wyoming traction law requirements.
What is the Colorado traction law?+
When activated on I-70 (Code 15/16), vehicles must have adequate tread depth (3/16″) plus snow tires, chains, or AWD/4WD. Vehicles without adequate equipment can be fined and turned back. Our rentals are maintained to meet these requirements.
What should I know about Vail Pass and Teton Pass?+
Vail Pass (I-70, 10,662 ft): Primary route between Denver and the Vail Valley. Frequent chain laws, closures, and wind gusts. Use the right lane if uncomfortable. Eastbound descent is steep; use low gear.

Teton Pass (WY-22, 8,431 ft): Main route between Jackson and Idaho. Very steep (10% grade), tight switchbacks, avalanche zones. Carry chains if you don't have AWD/4WD.

Independence Pass (CO-82): Closed in winter (typically Nov–May).
Where do I check road conditions?+
Colorado: cotrip.org or call 511. Wyoming: wyoroad.info or call 511. Both DOTs post real-time closures, chain laws, and travel advisories.
